In this guide

The side hustles worth watching right now fall into three groups. First, AI-training gigs, where you rate chatbot answers, record speech or film everyday chores. Second, creator work, which gets tougher platform rules from February 2027. Third, AI-assisted freelancing, where you supply the judgment the tools don’t have. In all three, AI is best at cutting your unpaid admin. It’s much weaker at the parts clients actually pay for.

What AI speeds up here

TaskAI helps?Why
Writing profiles, pitches and proposalsYesIt drafts in seconds. You fix the facts and make it sound like you
Tracking income, hours and mileageYesIt turns messy notes into a clean log and works out your real hourly rate
Vetting a new gig or job offerPartlyIt’s good at listing red flags, but it can’t check whether a company is real
Scripting and editing creator contentPartlyIt speeds up outlines, but YouTube won’t pay for mass-produced, generic AI videos
Doing AI-training tasks themselvesNoThe client is paying for your human judgment. Pasting in a chatbot’s answer defeats the point
Understanding your tax positionPartlyIt explains rules well but can get thresholds and dates wrong, so check IRS.gov

Start with a realistic baseline

Before you chase anything new, look at what side hustles actually pay. Bankrate surveyed 2,616 US adults in June 2025 (the most recent edition we found):

  • 27% of US adults have a side hustle, down from 36%.
  • Average earnings were $885 a month, but the median was only $200. A few big earners pull the average up, so plan around the median.
  • Gen Z leads at 34%, then millennials (31%), Gen X (23%) and boomers (22%).
  • The most common hustles are online sales (15%), consulting (14%), food delivery (9%) and crafts (9%).

So the useful question isn’t “what will make me rich?” It’s how to get from about $200 a month to something that’s worth your evenings.

What’s new for side hustlers in late 2026

HustleWhat’s newPay (from the official source)The catch
DataAnnotationContract work training and checking AI modelsAdvertised: $25 to $50/hr for general roles. Specialized roles (coding, finance, legal, medical) are shown as both $40 to $125+/hr and $40 to $150+/hr on the same pageThird-party reviews report about $14 to $25/hr for general tasks
Uber AI SolutionsRemote AI evaluation, translation, app testing and data labeling. You don’t need to be an Uber driverPaid weekly, every Monday, by bank depositYou must be of legal age, show a government ID and pass a background check (where local law allows)
Uber digital tasksA pilot for select US drivers and couriers who opt in: voice recordings, document and photo uploadsPay reaches your balance within 24 hoursTasks depend on client demand and aren’t guaranteed
DoorDash Tasks appLaunched March 19, 2026 (reported by TechCrunch). Dashers film chores, photograph dishes or hotel entrances, and record speech in other languagesPay is shown upfrontNot available in California, New York City, Seattle or Colorado
ProlificPaid research studiesResearchers must pay at least $8/hr. Prolific recommends $12/hrPay varies from study to study
TikTok Shop affiliateEarn commission by promoting products in videosCommissions vary by productYou must be 18+, US-based and have 1,000+ followers. Under 5,000 followers, you start in a 30-day pilot with capped shoppable videos

AI-training gigs: real, but treat them as a top-up

The biggest “upcoming” category is people getting paid to make AI better. If you want to test it, DataAnnotation advertises general roles with “no coding or technical background needed.” Prolific pays less but is a simple way to get paid for research studies. Uber AI Solutions is free to join.

Read the official figures as advertised rates, not promises. Even Uber says its digital tasks depend on client demand. If you have specialist knowledge in coding, finance, law or medicine, aim for those roles, because that’s where the advertised rates jump.

Creator hustles: the bar rises on February 1, 2027

Right now, YouTube’s Partner Program needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. You also need 2-Step Verification, an AdSense account and no active strikes.

From February 1, 2027, new applicants will need:

  • 1,000 subscribers, plus
  • either 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days.

Other changes to know:

  • Existing members keep their status. If you’re close to the current bar, getting accepted before the switch matters.
  • Shorts revenue: to earn Shorts ad and subscription revenue, a channel will need 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days.
  • New terms: creators must accept them by January 31, 2027.
  • Fan funding: the 500-subscriber tier is unchanged.

Delivery and rideshare: rule changes worth knowing

  • DoorDash minimum age: 18 in most states, 19 in 13 states (including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Texas) and 21 for new applicants in California. Bike or e-bike delivery (in select cities) doesn’t need a license or insurance.
  • New York City: restaurant and grocery app delivery workers have a minimum pay of $22.13/hr from April 1, 2026, up from $21.44.
  • California: on September 9, 2026, the state’s Public Employment Relations Board certified the California Gig Workers Union as the bargaining representative for all Uber and Lyft drivers in the state.

Six ways to earn more from any new hustle

Most people grow side income by adding hours. We think that should be the last thing you try, not the first.

  1. Work out your real hourly rate. Count everything: unpaid admin, waiting for tasks, messaging clients, driving to pickups. Many hustles pay less per hour than they appear to.
  2. Move up the pay ladder. On a single platform, specialist work pays more. In the wider market, consulting (14% of side hustlers in the Bankrate survey) uses skills you already have, so AI-assisted consulting can be a better use of your time than another low-paid task queue.
  3. Hand your admin to AI. Proposals, follow-ups, invoices, content outlines and expense logs are where a free chatbot saves the most time. You still check every word before it goes out.
  4. Stack gigs that fit together. If you’re a Dasher outside the excluded areas, you can fill quiet time with DoorDash Tasks. If you drive for Uber, you can opt into digital tasks where they’re offered. Only stack gigs that use the same idle time.
  5. Keep more of what you earn. Track mileage, claim the deductions you qualify for and pay estimated tax on time (see the tax section below).
  6. Don’t lose it to scams. One task-scam deposit can wipe out months of side income.

Worked example: why the advertised rate isn’t your rate

Every number in this example is our assumption, used only to illustrate the point. Say you put 5 hours a week into general AI-training work for 4 weeks.

ScenarioHourly rate (assumed)Monthly total
You earn the bottom of DataAnnotation’s advertised general range$25$500
You earn the low end that third-party reviews report$14$280
You earn $14/hr, but tasks are only available for 3 of your 5 hours$14$168

You set aside the same 20 hours each time. The whole gap between $500 and $168 comes from the hourly rate and from how much work is available. That’s why working out your real rate comes first.

Prompt you can copy: the side-income audit

Paste this into a free chatbot tier (the free versions of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini are enough for this) and fill in your own numbers.

You are a blunt side-hustle analyst. Below is 30 days of side-income data.

Gig 1: [platform name], earned $[amount], active hours [X], unpaid hours (admin, waiting, travel) [Y], miles driven [Z]
Gig 2: [platform name], earned $[amount], active hours [X], unpaid hours [Y], miles driven [Z]

1. Calculate the effective hourly rate per gig, counting both active and unpaid hours.
2. Rank the gigs from best to worst on effective hourly rate.
3. For each gig, list the unpaid tasks an AI chatbot could draft or organize, and the ones it can't.
4. Suggest one change that would raise the effective hourly rate next month without adding hours.
Show the arithmetic. Do not invent tax rules or platform policies. If you mention one, say it must be verified on the official site.

Check the arithmetic yourself, because chatbots still get sums wrong sometimes.

Where AI falls over

  • Out-of-date rules. Ask a chatbot about 1099-K reporting and it may still quote the old $600 or $2,500 thresholds. Neither applies now (details below).
  • Generic output. A proposal written entirely by AI reads like every other AI proposal in a client’s inbox. Your specifics are what get you hired.
  • Content that breaks policy. Mass-produced faceless videos can lose monetization, undisclosed AI-generated books break KDP’s rules, and AI-written fake reviews break FTC rules (see the next section).
  • No ownership. Art or text made purely from prompts may not be protected by copyright, so anyone could legally copy your bestselling design.
  • Can’t verify people. AI can spot the pattern of a scam message, but it can’t confirm that a recruiter or company is real.

Platform rules on AI content

  • Amazon KDP: you must disclose AI-generated text, images or translations when you publish a book, or when you edit and republish one. It still counts as AI-generated even if you edited it heavily. “AI-assisted” work doesn’t need disclosing. That means your own writing that AI helped edit or error-check, or ideas you brainstormed with AI but wrote or drew yourself.
  • YouTube: on July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy “inauthentic content.” Repetitive or mass-produced content can’t be monetized, and that explicitly includes AI-generated content made with generic templates and no original insight from the creator. Each video’s substance must be “materially varied.” This is the main limit on faceless, automated AI channels.
  • Fake reviews (FTC): the FTC’s final rule bans fake reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated reviews that claim to come from people who don’t exist. The FTC can seek civil penalties against anyone who knowingly breaks the rule. Never use AI to write “customer” testimonials for your product or gig profile.
  • Copyright: the US Copyright Office says “the mere provision of prompts” isn’t enough for protection. You get protection where a human decides the expressive elements, for example by selecting, arranging or modifying the output in a creative way.

The human-only part

In AI-era side hustles, the money is in the parts AI is worst at:

  • AI-training platforms pay for human judgment, and pay most for expert judgment.
  • YouTube pays creators who add their own perspective.
  • Clients rebook the freelancer who understood their problem, not the one with the fastest draft.

Let AI handle the busywork so you can spend more of your hours on the part only you can do.

Task scams look exactly like “upcoming” AI gigs

Scammers copy whatever is new, and right now that’s online task work.

  • The scale: the FTC logged 3 million fraud reports and $15.9 billion in losses in 2025, up from 2.6 million reports and over $12 billion in 2024.
  • How task scams work: an unexpected text or WhatsApp message offers paid “liking” or “rating” tasks in sets. You get small payouts at first, then a demand for a deposit (often in crypto) to “unlock” your earnings.
  • How fast they grew: the FTC saw task-scam reports rise from about 5,000 in 2023 to about 20,000 in the first half of 2024 alone.
  • What victims lose: the BBB says employment scam reports doubled in 2025 compared with 2024. The median loss to task scams was $2,300, and about half of more than 23,000 employment-scam reports involved text messages.

Red flags:

  • They contacted you first, out of the blue.
  • The work is “rating” or “liking” items in sets.
  • You have to pay to get paid.
  • The payment is in crypto.

Prompt you can copy: the gig offer check

Review the side-gig offer below. Do not declare it safe. List every red flag you see, compare it against the known pattern of "task" job scams (unsolicited contact, rating or liking tasks in sets, small early payouts, deposits to unlock earnings, crypto payment), and list what should be independently verified before anyone replies.

2026 tax rules for side income

This is general information, not tax advice. For your own situation, check with a tax professional.

RuleWhat it means for you
1099-K (payment apps and marketplaces)Federally, you only get one if you have more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. The $2,500 and $600 thresholds announced earlier no longer apply
Card paymentsThe $20,000 threshold doesn’t apply. Payment card transactions can produce a 1099-K for any amount
State thresholdsSome states set them lower. Massachusetts, Virginia and Vermont use $600. Check your own state’s revenue site
1099-NEC / 1099-MISCThe threshold rose from $600 to $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025
All incomeTaxable no matter the amount, with or without a 1099, including cash and crypto
Self-employment tax15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare). You file Schedule SE once net self-employment earnings reach $400. Half of SE tax is deductible
Estimated taxGenerally required if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. 2026 due dates: April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You avoid the penalty by paying 90% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s (110% if last year’s AGI was over $150,000)
Mileage72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, then 76 cents from July 1 to December 31, 2026

The “no tax on tips” deduction covers creators. For tax years 2025 through 2028, you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips, whether or not you itemize. The final rules list “Digital Content Creators” as a qualifying occupation (code 207), and visual artists were added too. To qualify:

  • The tips must be voluntary and not negotiated. Mandatory service charges don’t count.
  • They must appear on an official form: a W-2, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K or Form 4137.
  • You need a valid SSN. Married couples must file jointly.
  • The deduction phases out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint).
  • If you’re self-employed, the deduction can’t be more than your net income from the business where you earned the tips.

Who this isn’t for

  • People who need guaranteed income next month. There’s no guarantee AI-training tasks will be available, and creator income takes time to build.
  • Under-18s. TikTok Shop affiliate requires you to be 18, Uber AI Solutions requires legal age, and DoorDash requires 18 to 21 depending on your state.
  • Anyone hoping for passive income. Every option here needs your hours, your judgment, or both.
  • Dashers in California, New York City, Seattle or Colorado who were counting on the DoorDash Tasks app.

Whatever you try, review AI-drafted work before you publish, sell or submit it. Your name is on it, not the chatbot’s.

Try it in 20 minutes

  1. Gather your numbers (5 minutes). Pull last month’s side income, hours and miles from your platform dashboards or bank app.
  2. Run the audit (10 minutes). Paste them into the side-income audit prompt above, using any free chatbot tier.
  3. Check the result (5 minutes). Check the chatbot’s arithmetic with a calculator and write down the one change it suggested. If you drive for a gig, also multiply your business miles since July 1 by 76 cents to see roughly what that deduction could be worth.

You’ll come away with your real hourly rate and one concrete change to make. That’s more useful than any list of trending side hustles.

Frequently asked questions

Will PayPal or Venmo send me a 1099-K for my side hustle sales in 2026?At the federal level, only if your payments for goods or services are more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. Payment card transactions can trigger a 1099-K for any amount, and some states (including Massachusetts, Virginia and Vermont) use a $600 threshold. Either way, you must report all your side income, even with no form. Money from friends and family, like splitting a meal, isn’t taxable.
Can I copyright art or text I made with an AI image generator? Not if you only wrote the prompts. The US Copyright Office says prompts alone aren’t enough. Protection depends on human creative choices, such as selecting, arranging or modifying the output, or your own work showing in the result. If you sell purely prompt-generated designs, others may be able to copy them legally.
Do I have to disclose AI use when selling a book on Amazon KDP?Yes, if the content is AI-generated: text, images or translations created by an AI tool, even if you edited them heavily afterwards. You don’t need to disclose AI-assisted work, such as your own writing that AI helped edit or error-check, or ideas you brainstormed with AI but wrote yourself.
Is DataAnnotation legit, and does it really pay $25 an hour?DataAnnotation’s official site advertises $25 to $50 an hour for general roles and higher rates for specialist work, but third-party reviews report lower actual rates, about $14 to $25 an hour for general tasks. Treat the official figures as advertised rates. As with any AI-training platform, never pay a deposit to unlock earnings. That’s the pattern of a task scam, not a real job.
Can a faceless AI YouTube channel get monetized?Only if it adds real original value. YouTube’s inauthentic content policy blocks monetization of repetitive or mass-produced videos, including AI content made from generic templates without the creator’s own insight. From February 1, 2027, new channels also face higher thresholds: 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 watch hours in a year, or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days.
