Is Canva worth it for a side hustle or small business? The catch

Is Canva worth it? Free covers casual design, Pro is US$144 a year, Business US$250 per person. Where AI limits, license rules and Etsy fees bite.

contents 11 sections

For most side hustlers, yes, but only once Canva Free starts slowing you down. Free handles casual design. Canva Pro costs US$144 a year and pays off once you design most weeks and want brand kits, premium assets, background removal, scheduling or more AI. Canva Business, at US$250 per person a year, suits small businesses where two or more people share one brand and need approvals. The US$100-a-month AI Pass isn’t worth it for almost anyone just starting out.

What AI speeds up here

TaskAI helps?Why
Resizing one design for Instagram, Pinterest and FacebookYesResize comes with Pro, so you don’t rebuild the same layout three times. You still check every crop.
Removing backgrounds from product photosYesThe background remover is in Pro, and Business runs it “at scale.” Product sellers save real time here.
Writing captions and listing copyPartlyMagic Write drafts fast, but the voice is generic and every factual claim needs checking.
Generating images or short video clipsPartlyThese draw down a monthly allowance that runs out, and ownership of AI images is legally unclear.
Designing a template people will pay forPartlyTools like Magic Layers speed up the build. Buyers pay for your niche, layout and taste.
Deciding what to sell, and to whomNoThat’s market research and judgment, and Canva has nothing to offer on it.

The current price list

Many reviews still quote Pro at US$120 a year, or Teams seats with a three-seat minimum. Both are outdated. Here’s what Canva’s pricing page and its Pro vs Enterprise guide list now:

PlanUS priceWhat matters for a side hustle
FreeUS$01.6M+ templates, 5GB storage, 1 Brand Kit (limited to 3 colors), up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month
ProUS$18/month or US$144/yearOne person only. 3.6M+ templates, 141M+ premium assets, 100GB storage, 5 Brand Kits, social scheduling, background remover, resize, translate
BusinessUS$25/month or US$250/year per person500GB storage, 100 Brand Kits with approvals, team admin tools, 10% off print orders, double Pro’s AI allowance
EnterpriseCustom quoteMany security features need 100+ seats

Canva Teams is closed to new sign-ups and upgrades, and Canva says Teams “became Canva Business.” Prices exclude applicable tax.

Paying yearly saves 33% on Pro. By month eight on the monthly plan you’ve paid US$144, so if you’ll keep Pro at least that long, yearly costs less. If you’re still testing, pay monthly. Pro and Business both have a 30-day trial.

Before you pay, look at Affinity. Canva’s Affinity app (vector design, photo editing and page layout) is free for individuals on Mac and Windows, and only its AI tools need a paid Canva plan. If you’re upgrading for finer design control, Affinity may cover it for nothing.

Count your AI uses before you upgrade

This is where the plans differ most, and few reviews explain it. Canva’s AI usage page sorts its AI tools into three tiers:

  • Standard: Image Upscaler, Magic Formulas, Translate, Magic Write.
  • Premium: Magic Layers, Canva Code interactives, element generation, and others.
  • Ultra: conversational design with Canva AI 2.0, and creating video clips with Canva AI.

How each plan handles them:

  1. Free gets up to 20 Standard or Premium uses a month and no Ultra. The allowance resets at midnight UTC on the 1st. Once it runs out, Standard and Premium tools keep working with “short pauses between generations.”
  2. Pro gets an estimated 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses a month. On paid plans, Standard tools don’t count against the allowance, though fair-use limits still apply.
  3. Business gets about 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses a month. Only Business can buy AI top-ups, which must be bought online. Each one equals a month of the Business allowance and expires 30 days after purchase.
  4. Paid plans reset on your billing date every month, yearly plans included, so a yearly subscriber can’t spend twelve months of AI in one busy week.

Canva calls these figures estimates, says “actual usage may be lower,” and notes that complex prompts use more. If short AI video is your main reason for Pro, 20 Ultra uses can go quickly, and Ultra stays off until the reset.

AI Pass, at US$100 per person per month, gives 40 times more AI on Pro and 20 times more on Business. It isn’t available on Free, Education, Enterprise, trials, prepaid plans, or subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and it’s sold only at canva.com in a browser. At US$1,200 a year, we’d only consider it once AI output is a proven part of how you earn.

Run the numbers on one template shop

A common Canva side hustle is selling templates on Etsy. These figures are assumptions for illustration, not typical earnings: a US$8 template, a US buyer, no shipping, and 10 listings kept live all year. We count only the fees below and leave out any optional advertising.

Using Etsy’s fee basics:

  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of US$8 = US$0.52
  • Payment processing: 3% + US$0.25 = US$0.49
  • Net per sale: about US$6.99
  • Listing fees: US$0.20 per listing, and each lasts 4 months, so 10 listings need three fees each a year. That’s US$6.

Yearly Pro plus listing fees comes to US$150. At US$6.99 a sale, you need about 22 sales a year to cover costs, just under two a month. If you can’t reach that on Free first, Pro won’t help, because what’s missing is buyers.

Canva’s licence also shapes what you can sell. Templates that use Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links, not as PDFs or other files, “whether flattened or not,” according to Canva’s rules for products you sell. If buyers in your niche expect a downloadable file, build those products from your own assets. For the full build process, see our ChatGPT and Canva workflow.

Is Canva worth it for a small business?

A solo business follows the side-hustle rule: Free first, Pro once you design weekly. Pro covers one person, so a second designer needs their own seat, and that’s where Business comes in. Three people on Business cost US$750 a year.

Business earns its price when you use what it adds: approvals before anything goes out, admin control over brand assets, 500GB of shared storage, and 10% off Canva print orders if you print flyers or cards often. Without those, you’re mostly paying for twice Pro’s AI allowance.

Two cautions. Canva has raised team prices sharply before: in September 2024 an older US five-person Teams plan went from US$119.99 to US$500 a year, with 40% off the first year and Canva’s new AI tools given as the reason. Leave room in your budget. And Canva Shield, Canva’s legal cover if its AI output infringes someone’s rights, needs at least 100 Enterprise seats, so a small business using AI images carries that risk itself.

Platform rules on AI content

Canva’s licence sets the limits that matter when you sell what you make:

  • Allowed: Free and Pro content inside original designs you sell, such as templates, posters, mugs, t-shirts, stickers and e-books. Client work is fine if the finished design goes to one client who follows the licence.
  • Not allowed: selling Canva elements on their own, or as stock or clipart. One element with minimal changes, like an added border, still counts as selling it on its own.
  • E-books: unedited Pro photos are capped at 480,000 pixels.
  • Print-on-demand: allowed for original designs, but if the print service requires you to own the copyright, you can’t use Canva content there.
  • AI-generated images: the Content License Agreement doesn’t cover them. You can sell them under Canva’s AI Product Terms, but Canva warns that ownership “is unclear” in many countries.
  • Canva Creators, Canva’s program for selling designs inside Canva, rejects work that is mostly AI-generated or whose authorship can’t be verified.

None of this is legal advice. If a product line depends on owning the rights, talk to a lawyer before you scale it.

Prompt you can copy

Paste this into ChatGPT or Claude (free tiers are enough; our comparison of the big three covers the differences). Supply the plan details yourself, because chatbots often repeat retired prices.

prompt2 [placeholders]
Recommend a Canva plan for this workload.

Designs made in the last 30 days:
[list each item, e.g. "8 Instagram posts", "3 Etsy listing mockups", "1 client flyer"]

Current plan summary, copied from Canva's pricing page:
[paste the plan names, prices and features]

For each design:
1. List the Canva features it likely needs (premium photos, background remover, resize, Brand Kit, scheduling, AI image or video generation).
2. Say which plan includes each feature, using ONLY the pasted summary.
3. Estimate minutes saved with Pro, and show the reasoning.

Finish with a one-paragraph verdict: Free, Pro monthly, Pro yearly, or Business.
If the list is too vague to judge, say what's missing instead of guessing.
Do not state any price or feature that isn't in the pasted summary.

Check the verdict against Canva’s live pricing page before you pay for anything.

Where AI falls over

  • Stale facts: chatbots and older reviews still quote retired prices and the Teams plan, which is why the prompt makes you paste current details.
  • Generic copy: Magic Write listings sound like everyone else’s. Rewrite the first line in your own voice and check every claim about dimensions, file types or contents.
  • Allowance surprises: complex prompts use more, so your monthly count can drop faster than “200 uses” suggests.
  • Misleading trials: the Business trial gives only the Free AI allowance, so it won’t show you full Business AI.
  • Unclear rights: an AI image you can’t clearly claim to own is a weak base for a product.

The fine print that costs people money

From Canva’s terms of use (effective August 19, 2026):

  • Cancelling ends the plan at the close of the billing cycle, and fees already paid aren’t refunded “except where required by law.” A yearly plan means committing the full US$144.
  • Trials charge you when they end unless you cancel first.
  • Plans renew automatically, and Canva says it notifies you beforehand.
  • Price rises apply at your next renewal or 30 days after notice, whichever is later.
  • US users contract with Canva US, Inc. under California law, with individual binding arbitration and a waiver of class actions and jury trials.
  • Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google are refunded through Apple or Google.

Scams to avoid

There is no lifetime Canva Pro plan, so anyone selling one is running a scam. Criminals also share genuine Canva designs that link to fake login pages, so the notification email itself is real. Sign in only by typing canva.com yourself.

Discounts

Canva Education is free for currently active K-12 educators, with re-verification every 3 years. It excludes private or online tutors, unlicensed homeschool educators, parents and higher education. Nonprofit plans cover US 501(c)(3) organizations only, for one team of up to 50 users. College students get free Pro only if their school has bought Canva for Campus, so ask your school.

Earning from Canva directly

Canva Creators is application-only. Template Creators apply with a public portfolio of 5 to 10 examples, and Element Creator applications have been paused since 2025. Canva doesn’t publish royalty rates. Its payout help page, which may be older, lists a US$10 minimum payout (US$25 by wire) and requires a W-9 on file. From 2026 the IRS reporting threshold for Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC rose from US$600 to US$2,000 for certain payments, and payment platforms only issue a 1099-K above US$20,000 and 200 transactions. You still owe tax on income with no form attached, so keep records. This isn’t tax advice, so check your situation with a tax professional.

The human-only part

Canva can resize, remove backgrounds and draft a caption. It can’t tell you that wedding planners want a seating chart template, or that your Etsy photos look like everyone else’s. The money is in choosing the niche, deciding what goes in each template, checking the licence, and answering a confused buyer at 9 p.m. If you haven’t settled on a niche yet, our business ideas generator guide shows how to test one cheaply. No plan makes a design business passive. Pro takes away some of the busywork.

Try it in 20 minutes

  1. Open Canva Free and pick the design you make most often.
  2. Time how long it takes to build from a template.
  3. Spend a few of your 20 monthly AI uses on it, for example a Magic Write caption and an image upscale.
  4. Note every point where you hit a Pro-only feature.
  5. Paste that list into the prompt above.

If you’d use three or more Pro features every week, start the 30-day trial and set a reminder for day 25. If not, stay on Free and keep the US$144.
