AI writing jobs on Reddit: what pays and what to check
What Reddit says about AI writing jobs at DataAnnotation, Outlier and Mercor: official pay, payouts, scams, 1099 taxes and prompts to vet threads fast.
contents 11 sections
When Reddit threads talk about “AI writing jobs,” they usually mean contract work writing and rating chatbot responses on platforms like DataAnnotation, Outlier, Mercor, Alignerr and Handshake AI. Published rates go from “up to $17/hr” for entry evaluator roles to over $100/hr for specialists. Most of those figures are “up to” ceilings, though, and the work comes and goes. The Reddit reports that have been documented include steady earners and also people deactivated with pay still owed. It’s real paid contract work, but it isn’t stable and it isn’t passive.
What AI speeds up here
| Task | AI helps? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Digesting Reddit threads about a platform | Yes | A chatbot can sort dozens of comments into recurring claims in a minute. It can’t tell you which ones are true. |
| Checking a recruiter message for scam signs | Partly | It can spot classic red flags, but only the platform’s official site can confirm a recruiter is real. |
| Tailoring your résumé and LinkedIn for applications | Yes | Outlier asks for both, and AI is good at reshaping your experience around a role’s wording. |
| Passing the qualification assessment | No | It tests your own judgment, and DataAnnotation’s Starter Assessment can only be taken once. |
| Doing the rating and writing tasks themselves | No | We found no public rule from these platforms on using ChatGPT during tasks. Follow each project’s instructions, and assume the answer is no unless they say yes. |
| Tracking hours, payouts and tax set-asides | Yes | Turning messy payout emails into a clean log is boring work, and AI does it well. |
Sort the three kinds of “AI writing job”
- AI training and evaluation. You compare chatbot answers, rewrite weak ones and explain your reasoning. Most of the Reddit discussion is about this.
- Prompt writer roles. You write prompts meant to test or trip up a model, usually on those same training platforms. Alignerr’s site, for example, lists a Prompt Writer role at $40 to $120/hr. That’s an advertised range, not typical earnings.
- AI content writer jobs. These are ordinary freelance writing jobs where the client wants you to edit AI drafts or turn out SEO content faster. They’re on job boards and freelance marketplaces, and the pay is whatever you negotiate.
If you searched “AI prompt writing job reddit,” you’re mostly looking at bucket 2, and in practice that sits inside bucket 1. Bucket 3 is the only one where your own AI workflow decides how fast you work. Our guide to AI tools for freelance writers covers that side.
The platforms Reddit keeps arguing about
| Platform | What pay looks like officially | How you get paid | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| DataAnnotation | FAQ: $25 to $50+/hr for chatbot evaluation. Homepage: Generalist “up to $50/hr” | PayPal | One-shot Starter Assessment (about an hour). Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience |
| Outlier (Scale AI) | No rates in its FAQ. One 2025 US language-specialist listing averaged $31/hr on core work | PayPal, Airtm or ACH, weekly on Tuesdays | 30 to 90 minutes of onboarding, and pay starts only once you’re working on a project |
| Mercor | Varies by project. Its Meta “Nova” project paid $16/hr, $5 less than the project it replaced (Nov 2025) | Stripe (Wise in some countries). No PayPal | Mandatory time tracker that takes screenshots. Data breach in March 2026 |
| Alignerr | Site claims roles from $20 to $150/hr | Weekly | Site doesn’t list eligible countries |
| Handshake AI | “AI Evaluation Specialist: up to $17/hr”. Philosophy Expert up to $120/hr | Not covered here | Must be US-based with valid work authorization |
The details behind that table:
- DataAnnotation’s own pages disagree. The DataAnnotation FAQ gives starting rates, while the homepage gives ceilings such as “up to $75 to $125+/hr” for experts. Plan around the lower number. The FAQ also says, “We will never ask for money from you for anything.” TIME reported that DataAnnotation is a subsidiary of Surge AI, and Surge AI didn’t respond to TIME.
- Outlier doesn’t publish rates. Its FAQ says pay varies by expertise, project and location, and there’s no minimum number of hours. You need a valid ID and a phone from your country of residence, and you have to pass ID verification. The 2025 listing called the role “a 1099 contract opportunity” and said non-core work like onboarding “may pay less.”
- Mercor runs on an unusual clock. Under Mercor’s time-tracking and pay policy, the pay week runs Saturday to Friday on India Standard Time, wherever you live. Payouts arrive 2 to 10 business days after processing, and Stripe holds your first payout for 7 days. Mercor has said that all its roles are temporary.

What Reddit users actually report
The best-documented account comes from TIME, which quoted r/sidehustle posts about DataAnnotation in April 2024. TIME didn’t verify them, so treat them as claims made by users:
- One user said they’d worked there for almost two years, earning about $400 to $500 a week, paid through PayPal.
- Another said their account was deactivated with $2,869 of unpaid work, and support didn’t answer their emails.
- Some said they passed the assessment but were never offered any tasks.
According to the same article, US sites in 2024 often paid about $20/hr for writing and photo-labeling work. TIME called the industry “poorly regulated” and “opaque,” but it didn’t call any platform a scam.
Prompt you can copy
A pile of comments is only useful once it’s sorted. Paste comments from several threads into a free chatbot (the free tiers of ChatGPT or Claude are enough here; see where free tiers stop) and run this:
The reader is deciding whether to apply to [PLATFORM NAME] for AI writing
or evaluation work. Below are Reddit comments copied from several threads.
1. List each recurring claim (pay rate, task availability, deactivations,
payout speed, onboarding, assessment) and how many comments make it.
2. Mark each claim as first-hand ("got paid last week") or hearsay
("heard that...").
3. Note the date of each comment if visible, and flag anything older than
[NUMBER] months.
4. List 5 questions to check against the platform's official FAQ.
Use only what's in the comments. If something is unclear, say so
instead of guessing.

[PASTE COMMENTS]Here’s a second one for the “recruiter” who messages you out of nowhere:
Below is a job message received via [TEXT / WHATSAPP / LINKEDIN / EMAIL]:
[PASTE MESSAGE]
List every red flag, such as: unsolicited contact, upfront fees, crypto,
paying to unlock tasks, being paid to "like" or rate things, a check to
deposit and forward, or a non-official domain. Then list what to verify on
the company's official website before replying. Do not conclude that the
message is safe.Where AI falls over
- It invents consensus. If you ask “is Outlier legit?” without pasting any sources, you get a confident, generic answer that isn’t based on anything current. Always paste in the real comments.
- It can’t check dates. Platforms change pay and projects quickly, so a 2024 thread can describe conditions that no longer exist. Mercor replacing its Meta project “Musen” with the cheaper Nova is one example.
- It can’t verify identity. A scam that uses a real platform’s name looks fine to a chatbot. Only the official site can confirm it.
- It flattens your writing. On freelance content jobs, unedited AI drafts sound like everyone else’s. Check every fact and claim before anything goes to a client.
- It can get you in trouble on tasks. If a project hasn’t allowed AI help, pasting chatbot output into a rating task can put your account at risk.
The human-only part
Training platforms pay for judgment that models don’t have yet, and more of the money is going to specialists. In September 2025, xAI laid off about 500 of its roughly 1,500 data annotators and moved toward specialist AI tutors in STEM, finance, law and other fields. Handshake’s own range shows the same thing, from $17/hr for evaluators to $120/hr for philosophy experts. If you have a degree, a professional field or a second language, put it first in your application. Those are the things a chatbot can’t supply for you, and they’re where the higher rates are.
Watch for scams using real platform names
The FTC counted about 20,000 task-scam reports in the first half of 2024, compared with 5,000 in all of 2023. Its advice: ignore unexpected job texts and WhatsApp messages, “Never pay anyone to get paid,” and don’t trust offers to pay you to rate or “like” things. In 2025, one in three people who lost money to a job or business-opportunity scam said it started on social media. Apply only through the platform’s own website, and report fakes at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Real platforms carry a data risk too, because you hand over your ID and tax details. Mercor disclosed a breach on March 31, 2026, traced to a compromised open-source tool called LiteLLM. Five contractors sued, and Meta paused its contracts with Mercor indefinitely.
Plan for the work to stop
This work can disappear without warning. Scale AI cut about 500 contractors in July 2025, and in 2025 more than 200 Google raters working through GlobalLogic were laid off. Scale AI and Outlier were also hit with wage lawsuits in December 2024 and January 2025, plus suits over layoffs and exposure to disturbing content. Scale AI disputes the claims. Traditional writing isn’t a safe fallback either. The BLS projects “little or no change” in writer jobs through 2035 and says AI is “projected to dampen demand.” Treat each platform as one income stream among several.
Taxes on contract AI work
This is general information, not tax advice. Check your own situation with a tax professional.
- The IRS gig economy tax center says this income is taxable even if you never get a form. It goes on Schedule C, with self-employment tax on Schedule SE.
- Self-employment tax is 15.3%, and you owe it once your net earnings reach $400.
- For tax years after 2025, a payer only has to send you a 1099-NEC once you reach $2,000. Payment platforms like PayPal only file a 1099-K if you received more than $20,000 and had more than 200 transactions. So it’s quite possible to get no form at all and still owe tax (that’s our inference, not an IRS statement).
- If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, pay estimated tax with Form 1040-ES. You avoid a penalty if you pay at least 90% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s.
AI can do the record-keeping. Paste each payout email into a chat and ask for a running table with the date, platform, amount and a 25 to 30% set-aside. That percentage is our rough planning assumption, not a rule. Then check the totals against your PayPal or bank records.
Try it in 20 minutes
- Choose one platform from the table and open its official FAQ in one tab.
- Copy 15 to 20 recent Reddit comments about it into a free ChatGPT or Claude chat and run the first prompt above.
- Answer each of the five “questions to check” using only the FAQ.
- Write down four things: whether pay is quoted as “up to” or “starting at”, how you get paid, which steps are unpaid, and one red flag.
If official pages don’t answer all four, you’ve learned that before handing the platform your ID.
